What would civilization look like if guided from the very beginning?
Could we learn to govern ourselves wisely?
Or are we doomed by our very nature to slip and fall?

The Destiny Fog is a highly original speculative novel that centers around the life and death struggles of two young lovers in a different time and place.

Borne and Trieste come from radically different backgrounds, on a world shaped by mysterious entities known as the Guardians. These guides established a stable and prosperous path for humanity to follow, but are now gone, and the world faces its greatest crisis in history -- a catastrophic volcanic eruption that leads to famine, disease, and war.

Borne is wounded on the field of battle and struggles to survive...

Trieste, torn in multiple directions, must choose between following her heart and following her sense of duty...

And the leading adherents of the Guardians struggle to keep global society from collapsing entirely.

I need to admit up front that knew the author back in college in the 80's. I hadn't heard from him again until recently and, when I learned he had written a book, I was curious. I picked it up not having any idea what I was in for, except the hints I picked up from other reviews. Being set in an alternate world, it took a bit of time to get used to, but once I got drawn in, I was hooked. I was staying up too late most every night just to find out what happened next.

At its heart, it is a love story between two people at polar opposites of the socioeconomic scale. What makes it different is that it takes place in an alternate world. It is a world which has been led along a path of peace and prosperity by external forces for thousands of years, but after being left on their own, they have drifted from that path and the world has reached a tipping point. Will they collapse into war and economic chaos or will they come to their senses in time?

Great book for a first time author. Hope this is the first of many more. The book is captivating and very well written.
Highly Recommended! Mr. Aachen shows us an incredibly constructed alternate history while exposing the raw essence of human nature. As a fan of alternate realities one could not say enough about this book, except to ask how long we have to wait for more from this phenomenally talented author.
This is the first "Alternate History" work I have read... it struck me as some kind of science fiction (landing in both the science-based and fantastical story camps).
Wikipedia's entry confirmed to me that "AH" is often considered a subgenre of sci-fi.
Labelling aside, the story itself is well-developed. The characters seem genuinely human and believable both likable and irritating. I found the message most enjoyable of all - a message of sustainability and balance and military restraint. Between the story and the message, this is all in all a most enjoyable read and a first novel full of promise.
All-engrossing book! I still can't believe it's from a first time writer. Mr Aachen does a superb job of character development and world development; so much so, that by about a third of the way through, you won't be able to put the book down; you'll need to keep reading to find out what happens to the characters and the world. I wish he had ended it differently, but fortunately it didn't dilute an amazing read. I look forward to reading the parallel novel.
This book was a most excellent read. The author presents an alternate universe as compelling and fleshed out as the world in Neal Stephenson's "Anathem". The characters are well-written, complex, and engage the reader on an emotional level. The author manages to weave many complex philosophical issues together into a compelling statement presented in an entertaining way, without bludgeoning the reader over the head. The book is a scathing commentary on human nature and conflict, and is easily on par with "Ender's Game". While it clearly pays homage to the long tradition of "What if" social commentary in the genre, it stands easily on its own as a unique work. I highly recommend reading this book.
This is not your run-of-the-mill alternate history story - where perhaps Hitler won, or Rome never fell, or there were zombies in Medieval Scandinavia...

This is a COMPLETELY alternate history! As if everything went a little differently, all throughout history. You will not recognize the people - or the places - or even the technologies - but you will recognize humanity. I suppose that is the point of the whole exercise. If all of the history is different, then those things that are the same must be Human Nature, or "Universal Truths"... or perhaps a wild coincidence. Who knows?

Mr. Aachen has created an entire new world to explore, and it is a fun exploration. Well, not necessarily fun for the main characters - there is a war going on in this other reality after all - but fun for you the reader. You cannot take anything for granted. Things may seem so similar that it could just be a place and time here in our world that you had not yet heard about, but then something happens that is just too different.

I won't re-hash all the details of the story. I enjoyed reading it, and I bet you will too.
Self-aware, because throughout the book, people reflect that in other time-lines there are different outcomes, for better or worse. A thoroughly engrossing novel, I couldn't put it down over the weekend. The characters quickly pull you into their life struggles and feats. There's plenty of action as well as some fascinating biology with the Companions and the Assistant.
